Star Wars and Social Cognitive theory

Albert Bandura in his articles “Social Cognitive theory: An agentic perspective” and “Social Cognitive” discusses the concept of Social Cognitive theory and agency.

Bandura goes on to narrow the topic of agency into several different tenants, one of which, is Personal Agency and Social Structure. Bandura describes Personal Agency and Social Structure as operating “within a broad network of sociostructural influences.” Bandura goes on to elaborate that people are both equally producers and products of a social system; in other words, we add to and are the result of social systems.

A good example of how Bandura’s theory can apply to real life would be J.J. Abrams and more specifically his work directing the new film in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars Episode Seven The Force Awakens.

J.J. Abrams is the product of a social system, he grew up in the 1970s and has expressed many times that Star Wars hugely impacted his life. Without really know it Abrams became part of a social system that accepted the Star Wars franchise as more or less a masterpiece of not only the science fiction genre but of film in general. Within this social system there are rules and norms, albeit fantasy ones very different from ones we are used to, that when broken can cause unrest among those used to the status-quo in said system.

The unique nature of Abrams situation is that he has gone beyond the normal level most do to produce in a social system and now has the power to literally alter a social system entirely. While he started off as just another product of the social system of Star Wars, he has now gone above and beyond and become a key producer on the system itself, able to change the landscape drastically if he so chooses. Abrams has the power to alter the social system of Star Wars fans with his new ilm and has already met challenges by breaking the norm of the system.

Abrams broke the norm of the Star Wars social system by creating a change to the norm of what people perceive what a lightsaber should be. The now infamous cross guard lightsaber has been praised, ridiculed and even turned into a meme pointing out the almost ridiculous nature of his team’s concept. This clearly demonstrates a struggle between personal agency and social structure.

Bandura states that the self-system and social system often work together despite being at odds with one another. Bandura uses that example that that “poverty is not a matter of multilayered or distal causation,” yet social structures such as socioeconomic status and family structure effects self structures such as self-efficacy.

In Abrams case, his self-system and the social system are not agreeing. While Abrams and his team were confident that this new concept would enhance the system instead parts of the social system are rejecting the idea. This surely has impacted Abrams’ self-system and his self-regulatory factors.

Abrams started off as just being a product of the very specific social system. As Bandura states “The sociostructural practices, in turn, impose constraints and provide resources and opportunity structures for personal development and functioning.” In this way Abrams is limited in his personal development by the social system of Star Wars because fans would rebel against an idea that is too drastically different from what has been accepted by the system since 1977.

But in saying this Abrams is bring about a new era of Star Wars is it fair to be limiting this fresh look to the franchise based on a system developed 38 years ago? Star Wars fans might differ from the rest of the world in that response but it’s worth thinking about.

  1. Continuing the Star Wars franchise is something that J.J. Abrams fought with doing for a long time. Despite what fans want Abrams is always gonna have to contend with that Social System he first wrote with. He’s going to have to get used to the fact that an entirely new generation of fans are going to want to see the new material he’s coming up with. However, as with any movie franchise he has to also content with his old fans and living up to their expectations. So, with the new social system and the old social system of Star Wars fans clashing he’s gonna have a hell of a ideology to live up to.

  2. George Lucas confronted the same paradoxical struggle between his dynamic, immersive self-system and the social structure he constituted a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. When you are a creative like Lucas, you pour your blood, sweat and tears into every project you do, at least early on in your career. It becomes your baby and no one quite knows what is best for the baby like the parent. It has been said that you’re never quite finish with a work of art. Under the social cognitive theory (https://intrfce.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/bandura-sct_-an-agentic-perspective.pdf), Lucas wanted to exercise his personal agency to improve upon his original trilogy that defined the sci-fi genre. Normally, no one would question his desire to approach improve upon his original trilogy. But, when a franchise enters in the popular lexicon, fans feel like it’s as much as their franchise as the creator’s. Due to this, there was tremendous backlash towards Lucas about “improving” upon the original trilogy because they had a tremendous emotional investment towards the worlds it’s created. Now moving into the third trilogy with director J.J. Abrams, changes to the social structure have been purposed by Abrams. Abrams want to leave his footprint on the franchise by exercising his personal agency to make the changes that he wants to concurrent with his self-system (https://intrfce.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/bandura-sct_-an-agentic-perspective.pdf). Although, Abrams’ self system cannot be as immersive as Lucas’s, he uses his self-system to make organic changes to the social structure. Although the worlds created within the Star Wars universe are based in fantasy and fiction, the worlds and characters within them have to be dynamic and their decisions realistic to creating a genuine experience for Star Wars traditionalists and audiences being thrust into the Star Wars universe for the first time.

  3. Connecting Bandura’s essays to Star Wars was a very interesting and smart decision. I enjoyed reading your post. I agree with the fact that J.J Abrams is such a key influence in the movie world and especially in the Star Wars Universe. Being a lead mind behind the new projects and ideas allows him to work around what he likes and what others like as well. The example you used of the light saber shows how much a popular figure can affect the point of view of its audience. Not all agree with the decision but at the same time not all refute the idea. It is very interesting to see how Bandura’s essays and theories can merge with this specific topic. As you mentioned, when Abrams started, he was also a product of the social world he lived in. Seeing that he is now one of the people that individuals look up to, shows how much everything can change.

  4. I believe this backlash was also apparent when Disney took over the franchise at first. They wanted to establish between fan-fiction and the actual cannon of the story. A good deal of people were upset when they were told that a video game, comic, or cartoon was not considered cannon. I, like many other fans of the series, was upset when Disney (AKA the Darkside) decided that the comics and the Knights of the Old Republic video game were not cannon. This was because George Lucas allowed fans to try and add to the universe he created, however, it has been hinted at that some of the concepts from the Knights of the Old Republic are being used in the new story line, but have undergone some changes.

  5. Logan, I love that you connected Albert Bandura to a topic that you are so passionate about. Throughout the years, the Star Wars franchise has grown largely into a social system that I doubt anyone could have imagined. Starting with the original trilogy, to the prequels and now the new installment, more and more people are becoming involved. The new installment has brought Star Wars back in limelight as it’s been around for generations. J.J. Abrams took on this project knowing the long line of people who have put an effort into the franchise, not to mention the die-hard fans that grew up with and followed the franchise throughout its tenure. Continuing Star Wars is only going to make the social system grow even more and will give this generation more exposure to the series.
